Riding with a child 4yrs+

Biking Off-Road with a 4 plus year old being towed while riding their own bike, on a kids bike seat or a trailer.

Key Considerations:

To ride off road with your child you need to have confidence in your own riding ability before riding with your child. There are different levels of off-road trails. Make sure you ride on trails that match your capability. If you are unsure whether a trail is suitable, we suggest riding it solo first.

The solutions chosen are based on what we have determined as your needs for riding off-road

  • riding off- road  will mean you are generally riding on a bumpy and undulating  terrain
  • There will be a lot of movement on the bike as you adjust your body to keep balance with changes in the terrain
  • The width of the trail can vary and may be a single trail

Carrying or Towing Kids with an E-Bike

Do you want to use your E-bike with a young child or grandchild? This is a great way for any family to ride.

Overview: Electric Bike, Electric Cargo Bike

E-Bikes:

Using an E-Bike to ride with a young child is a fantastic way to start your families riding journey. E-Bikes are used in all riding environments from around town riding to multi day tour riding so you can choose an E-Bike that matches the type of riding you want to enjoy as a family.  Having the assistance of an E-Bike will help make the riding you do easy and enjoyable. There will be no barriers or limitations around where you want to go, whether that is distance or terrain/hills. When you add the weight of more than one child an E-Bike can be a life saver and keep you out on the trails and riding around town as your children grow and get heavier. E-Bikes have strong frames and are generally designed to enable carrying weight (exception being E-Mountain Bikes). So not only can you use them with children put you can also carry gear by attaching bags or panniers to the frame.

The biggest issue you may have is where your battery is and how this affects attaching things to your bike.

If you don’t have an E-Bike yet and would like some buying advice please read this story Buying an E-Bike to Transport Kids

Also think about your increased speed and how to protect your child.  Adding a windscreen to a front seat is a great investment or putting your child in a rear seat behind your body. Make sure you wrap them up warm before you head off on your E-Bike ride.  They should have at least one more layer than you are wearing on.  Shotgun who make a great range of mid mount seats also make “Kids Pogies” which are big handlebar mitts for kids size hands, a great added accessory to keep them warm all year round.

E-Cargo Bikes:

The ultimate in family transport, often used to replace a second car.  An Electric Cargo Bike takes all the effort of riding a heavy bike away with the assistance it provides you.  Also enabling you to ride hills.  Battery placement needs to be considered and whether this will interfere with your ability to attach a kids bike seat.

Type of Riding: E-Cargo bikes are for around town, urban, commute style riding. They are heavy and have a large turning circle so don’t do well on tight corners.  They need smooth, wide tracks for any type of off road riding. Often purchased as a replacement for a car, they are a big investment so need to be well used to make it worth it.

E-Bikes & Attached Kids Bike Seats

There is a good range of attached kids bike seats in NZ.  So you will be able to find something that works with the E-Bike you have.  The options include

  • Front Seats attached at your handlebar stem (age of child 1-3yrs)
  • Mid Seats clamped on to the top tube (age of child 2-5yrs)
  • Rear Seats attached directly onto a rear carrier or clamped to the seat post tube (age of child 1-6yrs)

  • Riding Off Road/Mountain Biking – Kids Seats & Towed Options for a 4 plus yr old
Riding with a child 4yrs+

Biking in Traffic with a 4+ year old

Key Considerations:

On the road and in traffic is a busy environment for riding a bike in. You are sharing the road with motor cars/trucks etc that are bigger and faster than you, therefore your safety is a priority. To improve your safety you need to make sure

  • you will be seen
  • if kids are being towed on their own bike, they need to be able to stay seated at all times
  • if in a attached seat your child needs to be strapped in and well supported in sitting
  • you have to be alert and have confidence in your own riding ability to ride in traffic before considering riding with your child
  • before you ride in traffic you will need to be familiar with the changes to the feel of riding that occurs when riding with your child in your chosen solution

When riding in traffic you will be predominantly on roads so riding on a smooth and sealed surfaces. Your rides are likely to be short and intermittent in urban areas, with a lot of starting and stopping.  With the exception of commuting distance by road. With all of this in mind, let us understand the best solutions for riding in traffic with a 4 plus year old.

Solutions & Support:

Your options for riding with your 4 plus year old in traffic

  1. Tow Frame – Follow me Tandem – Creating a bike to bike connection for kids who are riding their own bike.
  2. Tow Bar – Trailgator – Creating a bike to bike connection for kids who are well balanced riding their own bike.
  3. Bike Trailers – All bike trailer options are suitable but if it is only urban riding you will be doing we recommend the Recreation Multi-Use Trailer – Thule Chariot Lite.
  4. Rear Kids Bike Seat – Iki Junior – Suitable for kids over 4 years secured with a lap belt.

1. Tow Frame – Follow Me Tandem

Suitable for 3 -9 years. Our top choice for in traffic. By the age of  4 years a good number of kids will be riding their own bike. Due to the stability of the Tow Frame – Follow Me Tandem you can use this towing system with early riders. They do not have to be well balance independent riders to be safe and for you and your child to enjoy riding with the Tow Frame

  • This very secure bike to bike connection effectively creates a tandem with your child who is on their own bike.
  • With your child connected to you…you know where they are and make the decisions and so you can ride safely together in traffic
  • Your child will need to understand that they must remain seated on their bike at all times while in traffic.
  • Riding in traffic/urban areas often requires you to get on and off your bike saddle multiple times as you stop at intersections and do errands and activities. This busy environment requires you to steer around cars, obstacles and corners. With your child being towed on a very stable connection means there is little change to how you will do these skills when compared to riding solo. Learn more – How does it feel to tow a child riding their own bike
  • To help you be prepared before you ride in traffic please read Riding Safely with a Tow Frame
  • To improve visibility riders should consider wearing a bright helmet and clothing.

2. Tow Bar – Trailgator

Suitable for 4 -9 years. By the age of  4 years a good number of kids will be riding their own bike. Your child will need to be well balanced on their bike to consider using the Tow Bar. The design of this rigid bar means that it can create leverage causing some lean for your child and some feeling of disruption to your biking balance for the lead rider.

  • Due to the lean and disruption of balance it is suggested that the Tow Bar should only be used in low traffic volumes and for short time frames.
With your child being towed you will need to adjust to the changes in feel during these skills. Learn more – How does it feel to tow a child riding their own bike
  • To help you be prepared before you ride in traffic please read Riding Safely with a Tow Bar

3. Recreation Multi-Use Trailer

BIKE TRAILERS are suitable for a 1 yr old up to… Single Trailer – 1 child up to 36kg…  Double Trailer – 1 or 2 children up to a total of 45kg. Can be used as a Stroller from a young age by adding a baby sling (0-10months). Please note that by 4 plus years you will get limited time to use your bike trailer.

  • This trailer is best suited to riding on smooth surfaces. It is multi-use so you can easily convert it to a stroller/buggy while out and about.
  • The trailer is enclosed providing your child/children their own cosy space and helping to protect your child from the surrounding environment and weather. And help keep the 4 plus year old amused with some activities in the trailer.
  • Your child will be kept safe and secure while seated with a quality harness. You can purchase additional seating support to increase safety and comfort for your child. Please see Accessories Support for more information.
  • The size and bulk of a trailer can help make sure you are seen and help vehicles provide a wide berth.
  • To improve visibility please use the trailer with the supplied flag and the adult rider should consider wearing bright clothing and helmet.
  • Towing a bike trailer will make you wider and longer than when riding solo. To be safe it is important that you adjust to these changes. Please read. How does it feel to bike with a Kids Bike Trailer
  • To help you be prepared before you ride in traffic please read … Riding Safely with a Kids Bike Trailer.
  • The recreation trailer does not have additional storage. If you are using your trailer to commute/as a means of transport and you need to carry additional gear/groceries then you may need to consider this trailer.  For more detailed comparison between trailers please see Trailer Comparison.

4. Rear Kids Bike Seat

Rear Junior Seat  Suitable for 4-10 years old. Both the rear frame and carrier mount seats are still suitable for your child..a junior seat will offer you a family riding solution for longer

  • Your older child can easier hop on your bike…clip themselves in on the lap belt and you are ready to ride.
  • Great for short commuting by bike. You do need to understand if you can manage the weight of your child on your bike.
  • Riding in traffic/urban areas often requires you to get on and off your bike saddle multiple times when stopping at intersections and stopping to do errands and activities. With your child positioned behind you, you can comfortably carry out these activities. However with an increase in weight at the rear of your bike you will need to adjust to ensure you can balance the bike and make sure the front of the bike does not lift off the ground. Learn more at – How does it feel to ride with a with a Rear Kids Bike Seat
  • To help you be prepared before you ride in traffic please read Riding Safely with a Rear Kids Bike Seat

Teaching Your Child to Become an Independent Road Rider

Teaching Your Child to Become an Independent Road Rider

Letting your child ride on the road by themselves can be a scary prospect.  How can you prepare them for this type of traffic riding? Let’s take a look at what you need to know to make this a safe, enjoyable experience.

Supporting you and your family to SMILE when you ride.
teaching your child

The ability for your child to jump on a bike and get out into your community opens up a whole lot of possibilities and is nothing short of liberating.  As your child grows the independence that can be had because they are travelling by bike through your community will bring a real sense of achievement and is a great gift you can give them.

What is the best way to develop the skills & awareness your child will need to ride on the road?  There is an age guide of 10-11yrs but this depends on your child and your family.  How much riding have they done in their life and how good are they at concentrating?

Knowledge & Skills they MUST have…

Ideally you will have been preparing them for this stage of their cycling journey for a number of years by being a family who rides. To be able to teach your child you must feel confident yourself in this environment.  If you do not work on becoming confident or find someone who can help both of you.

Areas of Learning:

  1. Decision Making & Concentration
  2. Riding Skills, Balance
  3. Predictable Riding
  4. Routines & Processes
  1. Decision Making & Concentration

On road, traffic environments are busy. If your child is a confident rider the bike riding part will be an easy transition.  It is the traffic part that is the challenge for most children.  If you or your child are not very confident on your bikes please read our story on Improving Confidence.

When riding a bike in traffic you will be constantly processing and making decisions.  These decisions include

  • whether to stop or not for a light that has changed to orange
  • how to giveway at intersections or roundabouts
  • when to go if you are crossing traffic
  • how to move into a traffic flow or switch lanes
  • where to position yourself on the road

Have they interacted with traffic enough to understand what cars are likely to do on a road and how fast they travel? Only you will know if your child is ready.  It is always a good idea to take them into traffic and observe the things they do, the decisions they make.  When you think they can, let them lead the way and make decisions for both of you.

How many of the road rules do they understand?  Talking about rules as you use them and ride through traffic is a great way to learn practically but also make sure you read the Road Code with them.

Riding Skills, Balance

To be able to ride safely through traffic your child will need to be able to signal and look over their shoulder while maintaining a steady straight line of riding.  The general sequence is to look over your shoulder, to signal your movement, to check the traffic again, and finally to make your move. Signalling involves being able to take one hand off their handlebar to let cars know they are preparing to turn, change lanes, or stop.  To move through traffic you need to know what is going on behind you, what cars are approaching, so you must be able to turn your body and look over your shoulder without veering into this traffic.  We have written a story on these skills so please read it for further advice.

Being a Predictable Rider

Kids who are a bit more adventurous or confident won’t have a problem with the smooth terrain a road provides.  Trail riding or mountain biking kids often have to be discouraged from trying to make their on road riding more “interesting”.  Being a predictable cyclist is a great way to be safer.  Bikes are expected to occupy certain areas of the road, come from certain directions, ride in a straight line, etc…

If your child is jumping curbs, weaving in and out of obstacles or racing with their mates they become unpredictable and may surprise drivers.  You want a confident rider but they also need to respect the environment.

Routines & Processes

A different type of learning but just as important.  Having routines & processes will help to make their riding more enjoyable.  It is just about making them feel in control and solving issues before they become problems.  Knowing what to do when and how to do it all helps with managing in a challenging environment.

  • Bike – learn how to do a quick safety check before each ride.  Know how to pump up a tyre and when something needs looked at (brakes, gear cables).  How to communicate this or who will help them.  How to keep their bike safe.  Do they understand the risk of it being stolen? Do they have a lock they can use and do they know how to lock their bike to different types of fixed objects?
  • Helmet – their helmet must be fitted properly to their head every time they ride.  Any kind of impact will damage it including dropping it!  Do they have a way of securing it to their bike so it’s not stolen?
  • Gear – try to keep gear in the same place so its easy to find. This includes a helmet, gloves, lights, locks.

Problem solving when they are out with their bike.  Have discussions around what to do if they get a flat tyre (self sealing tubes will solve this problem).  Do they understand laws around lights and riding in low visibility.  Do they have lights for their bike or helmet?

What to do it they have an accident…

In this day an age it is a good idea to give your independent rider a cell phone they can take with them to where it is they are riding – school or after school activity.  Have your number loaded into it and make sure they know how to call you (most kids won’t need a lesson they can probably teach you!).  After a scare like this it is generally a good idea to go and get them. If the accident is minor, it is also a good idea to record some details.  Where, when, why etc.  Get your child to take the drivers number and contact details incase you need them at a later stage or talk to the driver yourself, always be polite and calm.  Remember no one intends to hit a child on a bike.  Your local council will be recording these types of traffic incidents to determine any high risk spots so please contact them so they can get an accurate picture of your communities traffic issues.

If the accident is more serious the police should be involved, insurance details will need to be exchanged and maybe a visit to hospital is required.  I truely hope this never happens to anyone in your family but it does happen to cyclists so you need to be prepared.  It is a good idea to have your contact details in an easy to find place.  If your child is unconscious people attending the accident will be trying to help and will look for something like this.  Good places are under the cover of their cell phone, inside pocket of jacket, or a small pocket on their bag.

Key Considerations:

On road traffic is a busy environment for riding a bike in. You are sharing the road with motor cars/trucks etc that are bigger and faster than you, therefore your safety is a priority. To improve your safety you need to make sure

  • you will be seen
  • your child needs to be securely strapped to the seat and well supported in sitting
  • if they are being towed on their own bike they need to be able to stay seated at all times
  • you have to be alert and have confidence in your own riding ability to ride in traffic before considering riding with your baby or toddler
  • before you ride in traffic you will need to be familiar with the changes to the feel of riding that occurs when carrying your child in a kids bike seat or bike trailer

When riding in traffic you will be predominantly on roads so riding on a smooth and sealed surfaces. Your rides are likely to be short and intermittent in urban areas, with a lot of starting and stopping.  With the exception of commuting distance by road. With all of this in mind, let us understand the best solutions for riding in traffic with a 2-4 year old.

Solutions & Support:

Your options for riding with your 2-4 year old in traffic

  1. Bike Trailers – All bike trailer options are suitable but if it is only urban riding you will be doing we recommend the Recreation Multi-Use Trailer.
  2. Rear Kids Bike Seat – All rear kids bike seat options for 1-6yr olds are suitable – choose your best match.
  3. Tow Frame – Follow Me Tandem – Creates a bike to bike connection for kids who are riding their own bike.
1. Recreation Multi-Use Trailer

BIKE TRAILERS are suitable for a 1 yr old up to… Single Trailer – 1 child up to 36kg…  Double Trailer – 1 or 2 children up to a total of 45kg. Can be used as a Stroller from a young age by adding a baby sling (0-10months)

  • This trailer is best suited to riding on smooth surfaces. It is multi-use so you can easily convert it to a stroller/buggy while out and about.
  • The trailer is enclosed providing your child/children their own cosy space and helping to protect your child from the surrounding environment and weather. It can be a little more difficult to monitor the comfort and mood of your young child when using as a bike trailer however regular stops can resolve this.
  • Your child will be kept safe and secure while seated with a quality harness. You can purchase additional seating support to increase safety and comfort for your baby/toddler.
2. Rear Kids Bike Seat

Bike Carrier and Bike Frame Mount options. Suitable for 1-6years up to 22kg

  • Your child feels safe and protected tucked in behind you. As you cannot see your child in a rear seat it can be a little more difficult to know their mood. However you can hear them and communicate with your chiild. Regular stopping can help resolve this which is common in urban environments..
  • The seat is designed to support your child in sitting making it a suitable option for riding early with your baby/toddler when they are well balanced in unsupported sitting.
  • A secure harness system keeps your baby toddler well supported and secure.
• To improve visibility the adult rider should consider wearing a bright helmet and clothing.
3. Tow Frame – Follow Me Tandem
Suitable for 3 -9 years
  • This very secure bike to bike connection effectively creates a tandem with your child who is on their own bike.
  • With your child connected to you…you know where they are and make the decisions and so you can ride safely together in trafiic
• To help you be prepared before you ride in traffic please read Riding Safely with a Tow Frame
  • To improve visibility riders should consider wearing a bright helmet and clothing.
There are factors other than ‘where you ride’ that will influence your decision about which seat or trailer to buy (your best match). Factors such as

  • The style of bike you have
  • The size of your family – how many children, now and in the future
