Bike Tool Terms

Too many terms, too much jargon ! This will help.  Bike tool terms is a reference of bike tools, what the tools are and when to use them.  This is an active reference that will grow as we introduce tools within The goRide Way (our blog).

Allen lever/wrench/key

Bike toolsWhat is it? A small, light and versatile L-shaped spanner that is designed to fit into and turn an allen screw/hex bolt (6-sided bolt). They come in a range of sizes but the best one to carry for basic adjustments on your bike is a 5 or 6mm one.

When do you use it? The most common use would be to adjust your seat height or tighten your headset.

Cleaning Kit

When do you use it?  When your bike is in need of a clean – mud, road grit, sand, grease build up, chain goo… Or as part of your regular maintenance schedule.

Bike brush cleaning bicycle tyres goRideCleaning brushes – these brushes should be part of your cleaning kit as bristles are essential for a thorough clean.  They are used to remove dirt, grit and grime from mechanical parts of your bike or hard to reach places.  Also great to work up a lather on your tyres.  If you can get a bike specific one that has good bristle length and start collecting your used toothbrushes for small, hard to reach places.

Floor Pump

What is it?  A floor pump is a really efficient way to pump air into your tyres quickly.

When do you use it?  Mainly at home during maintenance and repair work to pump your tyres up to their correct pressure.

Floor Pump Gauge – found on floor pumps, it measures the PSI (pounds per square inch), the unit used to express the amount of air in your tyre

 

 

 

Screwdriver

What is it?  A tool with a handle and shaft that is used to turn a screw by inserting the tip.  There are two different styles that are commonly used on bikes.

Flat head Screwdriver – The flat head or blade screwdriver fits a slotted screw.

Phillips head Screwdriver – The phillips head screwdriver fits a X head screw

 

 

 

When do you use it? Anywhere there is a flat head or phillips screw to tighten or loosen.  You need to do a bit of investigation here as every bike is slightly different and you may have different size (width) screws that require different size screwdrivers.  A couple of common places for screwdrivers to be are on brake levers or derailleurs.

Tool Kit – goRide Essential tool kit.

Whats in one? Puncture repair kit and/or tube. Tyre levers.  Hand pump.  Allen lever/wrench/key.

When do you use it?  This type of basic tool kit should be carried for short rides or urban commutes.  It is the recommended minimum range of tools that will assist you in changing a tyre tube, repairing a tyre tube, pumping up your tyre tube, adjusting your seat…

Bike hand pump

Hand pump.  What is it? A hand pump is small, making it portable, so you can take it in your tool kit. It contains a handle for pumping and connections to attach to the valve on your tyre.

When do I use it? When you need to put air into your tyre. So either during a pre-ride check or when your tyre is flat.

Puncture repair kit

Puncture repair kit.  Whats in one? Patches, glue, sand paper, chalk

When do I use it? When you have a puncture or hole in your tube and you want to repair it so you can inflate it again.

Inner tube - Bike partsTube.  What is it? The tube sits inside the tyre. It comes in different sizes to match the size of your tyre. Your tube size is embossed on the side wall of your tyre. Make sure the spare tube you are carrying matches your tyre.

When do I use it? When you have a flat tyre and you want to quickly get on your way. Simply replace the tube you are carrying with the flat one. It is a good idea to get into the practice of then repairing your tube once you have arrived home so that it can now become your spare tube in your tool kit.

Three tyre levers

Tyre levers.  What are they? These tools help you get your tyre off the rim of your wheel. It is a good idea to have 2 or 3. One end of the lever is curved to help you push it under the tyre. The opposite end will have a hook that allows you to attach the lever to your spoke.

When do I use them? When you have a flat tyre or you want to change your tyres you will need to get the tyre off the rim of your wheel. This is done by using tyre levers.

Wrench

A bike wrenchWhat is it?  An adjustable wrench or spanner will tighten or loosen bolts on your bike

When do I use it?  You may find bolts on your seat post, on your seat clamp, in the centre of your wheel holding it onto the forks.  Common in children’s bikes to have bolts.
