Will the bike tow bar – Trailgator – be a solution for you and your family?
The bike tow bar, the Trailgator, has success because it is compatible with most standard adult bikes including E-Bikes. It is easy to attach and remove from the child’s bike once installed. Meaning your child can ride independently or be assisted when needed.
Bike tow bars are great for short periods of assistance through ‘difficult’ spots and need to be used with children who have good basic bike handling skills.
See How to Attach & Use a Bike Tow Frame for more information.
The Trailgator – Bike Tow Bar – is used to tow a child on their own trailing bike. It is compatible for use with…
A lead bike – adult bike – 26 to 28 inch wheels
A trailing bike – kids bike – 12 to 20 inch wheels
The Bar is attached & carried on the ADULT BIKE at
the seat post requiring a diameter of 25.4 to 31.8mm
not compatible with carbon seat posts
The Bar is secured onto the KIDS BIKE at
the steering tube
no front baskets or accessories that will block clear access to the tube
Attached/carried by adult bike at seat post
Receiver attaches to kids bike at the steering tube
Seat Post Shims – ADULT BIKE
The Trailgator comes with shims to be placed around your seat post if needed to enable a secure tight clamp where it is installed onto your seat post. You will need 5cm of exposed seat post and a clear path for the bar to be positioned.

Receiver Mounting – KIDS BIKE
The position of the receiver will be different on different sized kids bikes depending on the frame design. You can mount it in an upper, central or lower position as the U-bolts have curved portions to work around the frame tubes. The U-bolts have an inside measurement of 4.5cm so the handlebar stem width of the kids bike needs to be less than this. The junction of all the tubes on the frame at this point can also create an issue – see photo of pink bike below. The maximum distance you can achieve between the U-Bolts is 9cm so if this frame junction is longer than that you will not be able to fit the receiver.
The front face of the receiver requires 8cm of clear space.

Receiver Mounting Positions:
U-Bolt position – central, one curves up/one curves down
U-Bolt position – lower, both curve down
U-Bolt position – upper, both curve up
At front stem, width greater than 4.5cm. Tube junction at rear greater than 9cm = NOT COMPATIBLE
