What level of security do you need?
There are 2 things to help you understanding the level of security you need when locking your bike.
- Where will the bike be locked?. What is the likelihood that the bike may be taken?. There are a variety of factors that may reduce or increase the risk of it being taken.
Reduced Risk: Their school may have a secure locking space for bikes. Is the locked bike visible to others making it harder to create a theft opportunity
Increased Risk: Leaving the bike unattended for periods of time. For example: Is there risk that your child may forget they biked to school and walk home. Where the bike are left is not visible to the school.
2. What is the value of the bike to you?. What is the consequence for you if the bike is taken? There are a variety of factors that will determine its value/ the consequence..
High consequence: It is a valuable bike. It is not insured. There only mode of transport to get to school, They love their bike and biking
Low consequence: Low value bike, it is insured, they have other options for getting to school or activities. They wouldn’t be too phased if they didn’t have a bike.
Understanding the risk/liklihood as well as the consequence can help you understand what level of security rating you need in a bike lock.
Features We Recommend
Choose Combination – you have 2 options for a lock – a combination lock or a key lock. For kids remembering a combination is an easier task than having to take care of a key
Choose Portability – Can your kids easily carry the bike lock, in their bag or on the bike. Both size of the bike lock as well as the weight contribute to the locks portability. Kids need a bike lock that is not too bullky and is not too heavy to make it easy to carry. .
Choose Ease of Use –They will need to be able to lock their bike on their own. A lock that they can manage to lock around the frame, tyre and whatever you are securing the bike to.
Locks We Recommend
A Coiied Combination Lock– comes with the features we recommend. It is a combination so no key is required. As a coil and lightweight it can easily be attached to the frame/ seatpost on the bike or eaily carried in a bag. This lock comes in different thicknesses. You need to match the need for ease of use to the level of security required. The thinner coils are easier to straighten though will have a lower security rating than the thicker coils.
Our chosen coiled lock is an easy to extend coil and easy to use combination lock making it suitable for both kids and adults.
Other Locking options
If a coiled lock does not suit your situation you can consider these lock alternatives
Mid to High level of security but portable. Comes at a higher price.
If you require high security to keep their bike safe then consider a U-Lock. Heavier and bulkier. Has the ability to be attached to their bike but may not fit a kids bike.
Security ties available as and key or combination. For low risk areas to keep their bike and gear safe eg: in a secure bike cage, if left visible beside where they are training.
