Supporting you to get the right solutions so you can be comfortable on your bike seat and SMILE when you ride

Welcome to goRides saddle comfort page, where we tackle the saddle/seat issues that are common for bike riders. Bike seat comfort is so important to your riding enjoyment but many riders suffer on their saddle.  A combination of strategies is usually needed to support your comfort.  Do your research, gather information, ask questions, and seek out what is right for you.  Don’t be afraid to share your experience with other riders, your friends or please get in contact with us to discuss your issue further.

Saddle discomfort is often caused by

  • a new saddle
  • increased riding time, increased frequency of riding
  • being new to riding or returning to riding after a break

We have written stories on common saddle complaints: Sit Bone, Soft Tissue, Tail Bone and Chaffing Issues, please read the stories that relate to you to get an understanding of what may be causing the problems you are experiencing.  Comfort can be achieved but it is a very individual thing so the solutions will be different for each person.

Always check saddle position first.  Small adjustments to the height and tilt of your saddle or the reach to your handlebars can have a big impact on your comfort.

Your sit bones & your saddle…

Key things to know about sit bone bruising is that it is common.  It will often resolve if given time but this will only happen if you have a saddle that is the correct width for your body.  Soft, cushy saddles do not help especially if you are riding for more than 30 minutes.

Best way to solve this problem is to have a saddle that is the correct width and to have the right type of padding on that saddle.  Dense supportive foam and gel layers on your saddle are great.  To help as you adjust to your saddle add padding in the form of a gel seat cover and/or padded bike underwear or pants.  You need to be kind to your body and give your sit bones the opportunity to recover between rides and to build up to longer rides slowly.

Correct riding technique is a large part of being comfortable on the bike.  To understand the importance of this please read… ‘A’ Riding Position on the Bike

Soft tissue & your saddle…

Key things to know about soft tissue compression is that every body is different so the amount and protruding of your soft tissue is different to everyone else.  This is a more common problem for forward bent riders and saddle position in terms of tilt is important to understand.

Best way to solve this problem is to create room for your tissue. Your saddle should have a cut out (hole).  A slight forward or nose down tilt can help.  If you add padding for your comfort on the bike try minimal, sleek padding that is not competing for space.  You need to be kind to your body and give your soft tissue the opportunity to recover between rides and to build up to longer rides slowly.

Correct riding technique is a large part of being comfortable on the bike.  To understand the importance of this please read… ‘A’ Riding Position on the Bike

What is the tilt of your saddle?  Many women benefit from a slight nose down tilt in their saddle.

Tail Bone Bruising & your saddle…

Key things to know about a tail bone problem is that it often occurs because of a soft saddle that is being ridden for too long.  Over the time of the ride your body is sinking too far into the saddle and your tail bone will be in direct contact with the saddle base. This is a more common problem for upright riders who transfer weight directly down through the rear of the saddle but it does occur with other body positions on the bike.  Collapsing into your lower back or tucking under when riding can cause this problem.  Once again the wrong saddle width particularly a narrow saddle will allow your tail bone to come into contact with your bike seat.

Best way to solve this problem is to create room for your tail bone. Your saddle should have a rear inverted V shape and a rear channel often helps. Padding on your saddle needs to support you and not collapse over time.  The saddle needs to be the right width for your body position on the bike.  Your core needs to work for the full length of your ride and not allow a poor body position. You need to be kind to your body and give your tail bone the opportunity to recover between rides and to build up to longer rides slowly.

Correct riding technique is a large part of being comfortable on the bike.  To understand the importance of this please read… ‘A’ Riding Position on the Bike

Chaffing & your saddle…

Key things to know about chaffing problems is that they occur with time on the bike. Caused by friction and heat created between two surfaces.  Good pedalling technique and a saddle that allows this good technique because it is the right shape.  As well as the correct shape for weight transfer through the right place – support under your sit bones.

Best way to solve this problem is to match your saddle to your body width and the type of riding you are doing.  The longer you spend on the bike the more need you have for a saddle that allows room for your leg to pedal. Don’t create problems by wearing clothing that is not designed for endurance riding (any rides over 45min to an hour).

Correct riding technique is a large part of being comfortable on the bike.  To understand the importance of this please see the video and read… ‘A’ Riding Position on the Bike
