bike on bike paths

Welcome to goRide’s Riding with Kids On Bikepaths page. This is where we help you to be confident riding on bikepaths with kids on a bike seat, towed or riding their own bike.

To ride on bikepaths with your child you need to have confidence in your own riding ability before riding with your child. Bikepaths in NZ can vary drastically. They range from sealed to gravel/bumpy or flat to inclines and declines. Completely off-road to being near traffic.  Requiring you to cross traffic or sometimes having sections within traffic. Make sure you ride on bikepaths that match your capability. If you are unsure whether a bikepath is suitable, we suggest riding it solo first.

Riding a bike on bikepaths provides a comfortable and relaxing way for your family to enjoy and improve your riding  As bikepaths offer this relaxed riding environment… most kids bike seat or towed options will be suitable in this environment.   As riding on a bikepath provides little limitation to your options it may be best to use other factors to determine your best solution for your family. Let us help you understand your options.

Rear Seat – 1-6 years or junior 4-10 years

Our rear seats will keep your child safe on bikepaths with a well supported seat and secure harness. Note the junior rear seat for the older child  (4 plus) only comes with a lap belt. They are tucked in behind you allowing you to communicate with your child.

With your seat and child positioned behind you, you have minimal interference with getting on and off the bike as well as movement on the bike. The rear seat provides a solution to ride together for a wide age range ( 1-6years) providing you with the lots of opportunity to create wonderful family riding memories and moments. See our story to understand more. How does it feel riding with a rear mount seat

Options: All Mid Mount Seats

Mid Mount Kids Bike Seat suitable for 2 – 6 years

The Mid Mount seats have your child mounted in front of you in an unharnessed seat. Your child needs to be well balanced in sitting before you can consider this seat. There are solutions for both standard and electric bikes. Choose the solution that best suits your family.

With your child positioned in front of you, your child will start to learn the feel of riding as they lean and move with the bike. You can easily communicate with your child making for a wonderful riding experience together. Having your child positioned in front of you, will alter the feel of your riding and you will need to learn to adjust. It can be challenging for small riders on a small frame riding with your child in this position. See our story to understand more. How does it feel riding with a mid mount seat

Options: All Front Seats

Front Seat suitable for 1-3 years

All front seats are suitable for bikepath riding… choose your match on the type of bike you have or whether you want additional protection such as a windscreen. Front seats offer great sitting support and a quality secure harness making it a great solution for riding early on bikepaths with a young child. You have great interaction with your child between your arms supporting you to enjoy bikepaths together.

With your seat and child positioned in front of you it can make getting on and off the bike a little more challenging. Though you don’t often have to get on and off your bike when riding on bikepaths. However we recommend that you only consider a front seat if you are an upright rider, have a medium/large bike frame and/or a dropper seat to provide the space you need in front of your chest to enjoy riding with a Front Kids Bike Seat. Options: Bike Only, Multi Use Recreation or Off-Road Kids Trailer

Double and Single available – suitable  1-6 years

Our Recreation and Off-Road Trailers are the best match for riding on bikepaths. Your choice will be based on whether you want a bike only or a multi use trailer, the type of surfaces you will ride, the amount of storage capacity you require and whether you want a single or double trailer. Our recreation trailers are best suited to sealed and gravel surfaces where as the off-road trailer suits gravel and bumpy terrain. The off-road trailer also has additional storage capacity so it is great for carting groceries and gear.  The kids are well supported in sitting in their own cosy enclosed space, so biking will be enjoyed by everyone.

With the trailer attached behind your bike there is little interference with your biking skills. However you are longer, wider and you have a weight to pull compared to when riding solo. Is the bikepath wide enough for your trailer and do you have the strength and fitness to pull the trailer? Learn more in our story… How does it feel to ride with a kids bike trailer
