Your Riding Position
To support your comfort on the bike and make riding feel easier we refer to you riding in an A position. The sides and middle of the A represent parts of your body.
- One side of the A is the full length of your back
- The other side of the A is your arms
- The horizontal line connecting the two sides is the connection between the back and the arms
By considering your position relative to an A we hope it will make it easier for you to both visualise and achieve a good riding position.

Using your Core when you Ride
To both achieve and maintain the A riding position on a bike you need to activate and use your core muscles. You rely on these core muscles to maintain this position for the duration of your ride.
Initially this may be a challenge but the more you try to maintain an A position during a ride the more you will be activating and strengthening your core muscles. Having a good core is beneficial on the bike but it will have great benefits to movement in other parts of your life as well.
Read our story on core muscles and their involvement in A riding position.
Breath Well on the Bike
How you breath is often a forgotten part of movement and activity and this is no different on the bike. Having an A position that you are able to hold but you are relaxed in, is important for being able to breath well. A strong but relaxed position allows you to use the right breathing muscles when on your bike. Having relaxed shoulders and elbows, and a relaxed grip, is important to reducing tension through your chest and will help you to be able to breath correctly when you bike.
