Â
Welcome to goRides – Kids Riding in Traffic page. Being able to ride in traffic with kid widens where you can ride and helps make riding a bike part of your lifestyle. Riding in traffic includes riding to school, an activity or connecting to bikepaths and trails that require you to cross traffic or ride through sections in traffic. Whatever it is because it is such a challenging and high consequence environment it does take some thought and consideration on how to keep everyone safe.
How to ride in traffic with kids on their own bike
Key things to know… Traffic environments are busy, dynamic and unpredictable making safety a challenge and a priority. If your child is riding their own bike but it is not yet safe for them to ride in a traffic environment you can provide assistance and safety by attaching them to your bike. Creating a bike to bike connection with your child makes riding in traffic an option – you know where they are and you make all the decisions for your child. If considering a bike to bike connection for a young child you have to be confident that they will remain seated on their bike at all times.
Best way to solve this issue is to bike as well so you can progress your child through stages of riding in traffic. For older kids simply use our resource to work towards becoming an independent rider in traffic.
- Start with kids riding their own bike but connected to your bike using a bike to bike connection. A Tow Frame is the most stable connection and best suited to traffic environments. A Tow Bar is best suited to low traffic volumes.
- If you ride a bike then ride together in traffic. Help keep them safe and teach them the road rules and how to ride safely in traffic, see our story.
- Prepare them for riding independently in traffic.

Outer Layers for Visibility
Key things to know…  Helping them be seen helps keep them safe. Motor vehicles need to be aware they are present and sharing the space. The earlier a driver sees them the less the risk. The brighter the better. If this is a challenge because of school uniform restrictions make sure you choose brightness in other things – helmets, gloves, bags.
Best way to solve this issue is to make outer layer choices that make them as visible as possible. When you can get them to use riding clothing that is bright (fluro colours or simply a bright colour) and reflective. Have words, shapes or stripes that are reflective on clothing or bags.
