When is my Child Ready to ride a Pedal Bike?

At some point in your childs learn to ride journey they will need to progress from a balance bike to a pedal bike – so when are they ready?

 SMILE when you ride.

Is your child riding a balance bike and you are wondering when is the right time to progress them to a pedal bike? Our first piece of advice is don’t rush it. Let them love riding their balance bike. Let them explore and really master the balance bike before tackling the new skill of riding a pedal bike.

Kids can have so much fun on their balance bike when they become competent at riding it. You can set up courses, they can ride on pump tracks along trails. Let them enjoy their riding on a balance bike.

Key skills they need to master on a balance bike

There are some skills that they will develop and become competent at on a balance bike. Once they have mastered the following skills then you know they are ready to consider introducing the pedal bike on their learn to ride journey

GLIDING: This is first on our list as this is the most important skill they need to master before you consider progression to a pedal bike. Are they competent at taking their full weight through the bike seat and then glide on a balance bike. That is the bike has momentum and their feet are in the air. Can they glide distance and repetitively glide  Once they are competent at gliding they have effectively mastered the skill of balance on a bike,

STEERING: Can they competently steer  with control, around corners, avoid obstacles,  when riding there balance bike at a reasonable speed.

STOPPING/SPEED:  Are they able to control their speed and come to a stop on their balance bike.

If your balance bike comes with a brake then it is a great idea to introduce using a hand brake while riding their balance bike. Can they use their handbrake and stop on a spot on their balance bike.

If the balance bike doesn’t have a brake then you can introduce this with their pedal bike.

Over the age of 5 and never ridden a balance bike

We highly recommend that you start your child’s learn to ride journey early with riding a balance bike,  If your child is over the age of 5 and has age appropriate motor development ( such as running, jumping and hopping) then you can start their journey on the beginner pedal bike. If they are struggling with these motor skills we would highly recommend a balance bike for older kids and working through our balance bike beginner and competent levels

The right time for your family

Does your competent balance bike rider have a younger sibling that is keen and ready to start using a balance bike? Sometimes managing the whole family through their learn to ride journey may mean that it would be best for the family if your child progresses to a pedal bike so you can free up the balance bike for a younger sibling.

This is only an option if they meet the criteria above, If they are not ready then we suggest that it is best to purchase an additional balance bike. They need to be ready for the progression to a pedal bike.

Still have the option of riding the balance bike while learning to ride the pedal bike.

If able to, it can be a great idea to have both the option of the balance bike and a pedal bike to ride as they go through the transition to being competent on the pedal bike. While they are being challenged learning something new it can be great for your child to choose at times to ride the balance bike… the bike they are good at and really enjoy.

Tips to get a reluctant toddler wearing their first bike helmet

Tips to get a reluctant toddler wearing their first bike helmet

Some toddlers are very happy to wear their helmet, others are not so compliant and keen. Every child is different and it is useful to understand some options and strategies to use to help your toddler feel comfortable wearing a bike helmet

A Helmet that is comfortable and they like

There are features about the Bike Helmet than can support helmet wearing for the reluctant toddler:

Weight and shape of the helmet. A light weight helmet that is similar to the shape of head is going to be less of a change

Colour and/or graphics they like. If they love the look of their helmet it is going to be easier to get them to wear their helmet

A bike helmet with a pinch guard It can be a little fiddly getting the chin strap clipped on a toddler.  One sure way to put them off wearing their helmet is if you pinch their skin under their chin. Toddler Helmets can come with a pinch guard to prevent this from occurring. Making the skin taught under the chin can also assist with this, so getting them to look up slightly at something may be possible with some toddlers

A helmet that fits. A correctly fitted helmet is vital to protect their head but it also is important so that the helmet is comfortable to wear.

Tips to get your toddler wearing their helmet

Start early. Wearing a helmet is new for your child so introduce your child to their helmet well before you plan their first ride…whether that is on a bike seat or a balance bike or their first pedal bike.

Create interest in the helmet. Touch it. look at it together. Ask questions, talk about it- the colour etc., Play hide and seek with it. Anything that makes them more familiar with the helmet and they don’t have a negative association with the helmet

When you are not focusing on the helmet leave it in a place they can see it so they become familiar with it.

Seeing others wearing a helmet can assist with your childs comfort about wearing a helmet. If you have a bike helmet put your helmet on. Put yours on first. Wear your helmet around the house. Take your child to somewhere where he or she will see other kids wearing a helmet like a kids pump track, show them some photos of kids wearing the helmet ( use the internet)

For the first steps to wearing you are simply trying to place it on their head – do no worry about the buckle at first. If you succeed at this you can then work to them feeling OK about it being on their head for a bit of time and then consider the buckle

For fitting, do it in short sessions. Put it on quick, see what needs adjusting, take it off, make adjustment, try it on again a bit later.

Be patient and do not make your child feel rushed. Every child is different and most will become comfortable about wearing a bike helmet with some gentle facilitation
