Welcome to goRides Riding in Cooler Weather page, where we support you to be prepared and have the gear you need to be comfortable riding in a wider range of temperatures. Helping you to extend your riding season.
When you ride you create air flow, this causes a draft and a cooling of your body temperature. The faster you ride the more this effect is accentuated e.g on an E-Bike or when descending down a hill, resulting in you quickly feeling the chill from the air. This is why bike riders frequently require more than one layer of clothing and longer lengths to support being warm on the bike even at mild air temperatures, so when the temperatures do drop we need to be more prepared and protected.

Layer in Cooler Weather
Key things to know: Having gear that will keep you warm will improve your comfort to ride in a wider range of conditions and support you to ride more often. It is important to be prepared for changing conditions when you ride especially if you are riding distance or time and are in more isolated environments. Whenever you ride you should be carrying additional layers that are easy to get on and off.
Best way to solve these issues: The best way to control your temperature is by layering your clothing. In cooler weather you should wear 2 or more layers. You can also add length to your clothing, 3/4 length and full length items work really well on a bike, just make sure you still have good movement across your joints. Thermal fabrics like brushed performance nylons and merino are a great addition to your riding wardrobe and an outer layer that protects your upper body – chest, neck area – from cold air flow.

Protect Your Extremities in Cooler Weather
Key things to know: Your extremities move very little when you ride, they are often the parts that are static. Your toes, fingers, your ears and neck. Therefore they are often the parts that get cold first. Cold extremities are not pleasant so it is important to make an effort to keep them warm. If they are warm they will function well when you change gears or brake.
Best way to solve this problem: Have riding gear that you wear for warmth. Gloves, socks, head and neck warmers that will cover and protect your extremities from the conditions. These base layer garments should provide warmth and be breathable and moisture wicking. Again merino is a great fabric to use to keep yourself warm. In really cold temperatures you can even layer up – wear two pairs of socks, thermal and merino gloves. Remember to move your toes & fingers regularly to keep your circulation going and to help blood flow through them.
