Attaching a Bike Tow Frame – Follow Me Tandem.
Create plenty of family biking memories with a Bike Tow Frame. Take kids, who are riding their own bike, distances and places they may struggle to go on their own.
Welcome. The Bike Tow Frame ( Follow me Tandem) is a great towing solution as it is compatible with most standard adult bikes including E-Bikes. It is easy to attach and remove from the child’s bike once installed. Meaning your child can ride independently and then be assisted when needed. The Tow Frame is safe up to 45kg – combined weight of trailing bike and rider.
When in use the front wheel of the trailing (child’s) bike is lifted off the ground. The Tow Frame design prevents the child from being able to steer and its wheel to wheel attachment (axle to axle) provides many advantages. Its very stable, supporting you to ride early with your child. They don’t have to be a competent independent rider to enjoy the tow frame. There is greater flexibility for riding with multiple children. (you can use with a seat attached front/mid or rear) Children can choose to pedal or not while being towed, making the ride easier for them and helping them SMILE.
Safely and Successfully Attaching your Tow Frame Â
goRide recommends you follow the instructions of the manufacturer in attaching your Tow Frame. goRide has attached a Tow Frame to a variety of different bikes, we aim to understand and support this experience for you. We know if we have success on the installation then so can you.
The initial installation will take a little time but once installed connecting two bikes while out riding is easy and quick. You will need to allow yourself some time to understand and enjoy working through the installation process. It is very important that the adult who will be using the Bike Tow Frame understands how it is attached.Â
Before you start: Get what you need – the lead bike, trailing bike, the Tow Frame and any tools that you may need – adjustable spanner, ruler/measuring tape and metal cutters.Â
Lead Bike – Preparing and attaching the Tow Frame to the lead bikeÂ
goRide Tips:
When replacing the Quick Release Skewer you find your bike does not have a quick release skewer/hollow spindle you will require an additional adaptor. See Will the Tow Frame Fit my Bike?
In the video the Tow Frame is shown being attached to the bike seat rails as an anchor for securing the Tow Frame on the adult bike while not in use – you can use a rear carrier as an alternative anchor point.
Trailing Bike – Prepare the Kids BikeÂ
goRide Tips:
- Â When replacing the wheel nuts leave the washers in place
- Use the removed wheel nuts to match to the correct spindle size – there are 3 different sizes to choose from
If you find your childs bike has a quick release skewer you will need to purchase an additional adaptor… see Will the Bike Tow Frame Fit my Bike?
The position of the whole clamp will have to be adjusted so do not firmly tighten yet.
 Prepare the
Tow Frame to fit the wheel size of your child’s bike
 goRide Tips:Â
Use your child’s bike to find the length of the frame. Mark the frame at this point – waterproof pen or tape.
Use a ruler or measuring tape for accuracy to set both sides to the same position.
Receiver clamp positioning – trouble shooting
The best position of the child’s bike is when the front wheel is 6-8cm off the ground. If this is not the case, no problem, move the clamp on the down tube until the correct position is reached.
When you have found the correct position firmly tighten the 2 nuts of the clamp.
In some cases the kids down tube will be an unusual shape, oval, conical, curved. If you are having trouble getting a good grip with the metal strip of the clamp, remove the velcro strap and use rubber tubing – ideally from an old bicycle inner tube.
Check the tightness of the receiving clamp and safety lock regularly – before every ride
Frame arm positioning – trouble shooting
If you can not find a good position for the clamp that gets the child’s wheel 6-8cm off the ground you can mount the arm upside down.
To turn the arm, loosen the black nuts, pull the arm completely out, turn it over 180 degrees and slide it back in. Firmly tighten the black nuts.
Tow frame mounted with arm in normal position – 12 inch kids bike
Tow frame mounted with arm upside down – 20 inch kids bike
