Through Axle Sizing Guide
Know how to buy the right sized Through Axle for a Tow Frame – Follow Me Tandem
All axles are made to order in the USA by the Robert Axle Project.
Is the rear axel of your rear wheel on your bike a ‘Through Axel’ ? see Will a Bike Tow Frame Fit my Bike? for more information.
If yes…You will need to replace this rear axel with a through axel that will allow you to to attach the Tow Frame – Follow Me Tandem
The correct sized replacement axel for your bike
To get the correct axle size you have to know several things about your bike & rear wheel hub.. You will be able to find this information online by going to your bike brands website eg. Giant and finding your bike.
Bike type e.g City/Commute, MTB, Road bike
Brand of the bike
The width (size) of the rear hub – If you have found your bike online look under specifications/specs. You want the rear wheel hub width. This could be found in rear wheel information or hub values.
- If this search doesn’t help you can measure the hub width by removing your rear wheel from your bike and measuring between the dropouts. For some guidance see Will a Bike Tow Frame Fit my Bike?
- Or send through the information to us at hello@goride.co.nz and we will help you find the right solution
Model & year of bike
Through Axle Size
When you have all the information you need please visit The Robert Axle Project website and follow the Axle Finder prompts until you are given a Through Axle Match.Â
At this point you can order on the Robert Axle website directly or return to goRide’s Through Axle product page and choose your axle size by taking note of the result given. We will then order the axle for you.
Through Axle Order Size Explained
The size of your replacement Through Axel will be described by the following three measurments.
- Diameter: – Usually 12
- Thread Pitch – Either 1, 1.5 or 1.75mm
- Length – Either 169, 172, 175, 178mm.
Written as diameter x thread pitch then length  For example 12 x 1.5 L169
A couple of points to note
- The true length of the axle shaft you will receive will be 178 mm but you will be able to shorten to your required length using the supplied 6 mm or 3 mm spacers. This allows for axle lengths of 178, 175, 172, or 169 mm to be acheived.Â
- Through-axle lengths do not equal hub standards. An axle has to be longer than the hub to fit in the frame. A 12×142 hub does not equal a 142 mm long Robert Project axle.
