Environment as well as the time your bike is left unattended

If you are considering investing money in a bike lock for your bike you need to be buying for it’s greatest risk.  Make sure you consider its risk both out and about and at home. Remember it only takes a single opportunity for your bike to be taken.

Asked yourself these questions:  Where will the bike be locked? What is the likelihood that the bike may be taken?

Reduced Risk: Secure locking spaces designed for bikes. Is it visible to a lot of people?

Increased Risk: Leaving the bike unattended for long periods of time. A space where the bike is not visible to others.

The value of your bike to you

What is the value of the bike to you? What is the consequence for you if the bike is taken? There are a variety of factors that will determine its value/ the consequence…

High consequence: It is a valuable bike in dollar amounts to replace. It is not insured. It is your only mode of transport. It is unique and hard to replace.  You love your bike and biking

Low consequence: Low value bike.  It is insured and easy to replace. You have many options for transport. Not really phased about living without your bike.

Understanding the risk as well as the consequence can help you understand what level of security rating you need in a bike lock.

Analysis of level of security required

Work through our little exercise to help you understand the level of security you need from a Bike Lock.

The X Axis (along the bottom).  What is the likelihood that your bike may be taken?  Determine where your situation lies from low to high risk.

The Y Axis (along the side).  What is the value of your bike to you?  Determine its worth from low to high value.

Mark the junction between these 2 points and determine whether your situation is best suited to a low, med or high security lock.

Plot an X where both likelihood and value meet. Is it in a green area (low risk), orange area (medium risk) or a red area (high risk)?

This X is plotted for me… reasonably low likelihood but living without my bike would be high for me as my bike represents a lot of value to me. The junction between these is plotted with an X.  Revealing I should choose a medium to high security rated lock.
