SMILE when you ride

Welcome to goRide’s Riding with Kids Off-Road page. This is where we help you to be confident riding off-road with kids on a bike seat, towed or riding their own bike.

To ride off-road with your child you need to have confidence in your own riding ability before riding with your child. There are different levels of off-road trails. Make sure you ride on trails that match your capability. If you are unsure whether a trail is suitable, we suggest riding it solo first.

The solutions chosen are based on what we have determined as your needs for riding off-road

  • riding off-road will mean you are generally riding on bumpy terrain
  • there will be a lot of movement on the bike as you adjust your balance to changes in the terrain
  • trail widths can vary and may widen & narrow.  Are you happy on a single trail?

Let us help you understand your options, determine what is the best solution and help you ride safely with kids of all ages off-road.

Your Off-Road Options – Attached Seats or Towed Trailer

If riding off-road you need to be confident riding solo on the trail. You need to be comfortable with how it feels riding with your child in the chosen solution. Make sure you have practised in a more relaxed environment first.

The three kids seats/towed options for riding with your child off-road are;

  1. Mid Mount Seat – best attached to the bike solution
  2. Towing a Off-Road or Sports Bike Trailer
  3. Attaching a Rear Seat and/or Front Seat.  Easy off-road trails only

Attached Kids Seat – Best Off-Road Match

Mid Mount Kids Bike Seat for Mountain Biking, 2-5yrs

The Mid Mount Shotgun seats have your child mounted in front of you in an unharnessed seat. Your child needs to be well balanced in sitting before you can consider this seat. There are solutions for both standard and electric mountain bikes. Quick and easy to mount to your bike and remove so you can easily choose to ride solo or with your child.

With your child positioned in front of you, your child will start to learn the feel of riding as they lean and move with the bike. You can easily communicate with your child making for a wonderful riding experience together. Having your child positioned in front of you, will alter the feel of your riding and you will need to learn to adjust. It can be challenging for small adult riders on a small frame riding with a child in this position. See our story to understand more. How does it feel riding with a Mid Mount Seat

Trailer – Best Off-Road Match

Kids Bike Trailer, 1-6yrs

The multi-use Off-Road Trailer or the Sports Trailer are the best match for riding off-road. With high quality suspension these trailers are designed to be used walking, running and biking on off-road trails. With the kids well supported in their own cosy space… and with good storage. It is about deciding where and for how long you will go.

With the trailer attached behind your bike there is little interference with your biking skills as you move around to adjust your balance to match the terrain. However you are longer, wider and you have a weight to pull compared to when riding solo. Is the trail wide enough and do you have the strength and fitness to pull the trailer over the varied terrain. Learn more in our story… how does it feel to ride with a Kids Bike Trailer

Alternative Off-Road Option – Attached

Rear Seat, 1-6yrs or Junior Seat, 4-10yrs

The rear seats will keep your child safe on easy trails in a well supported seat and secure harness. Note the Junior Seat for an older child (4+) only comes with a lap belt. They are tucked in behind you allowing you to communicate with your child.

With your seat and child positioned behind you, you have minimal interference with movement as you adjust to the terrain of off-road riding.  These seats are best used on easy off -road trails.

Alternative Off-Road Option – Attached

Front Seat 1-3yrs

Front seats offer great sitting support and a quality secure harness. You have great interaction with your child between your arms.

With your seat and child positioned in front of you it can make moving around to adjust your balance to the terrain a little more challenging. We recommend that you only consider a front seat if you are an upright rider, have a large bike frame and/or a dropper seat for riding easy off road trails.

Your Off-Road Options – Kids On Their Own Bike

A great way to extend or progress your child in an off-road environment is to have the option of towing.

Creating a bike to bike connection with your child on off-road trails allows you to assist them with challenges – hills, distance, wind, rain. You can give them a rest or tow them the whole way.

To ride together safely you as the lead rider will need to be confident riding solo in off-road. You need to be comfortable with how it feels riding with your child being towed on their bike behind you. It is important you feel well balanced on your bike and understand you are now significantly longer. Good communication is key to a good experience using a tow.

You have two bike to bike connection options for off-road riding;

  1. Tow Rope – Towhee
  2. Tow Frame – Follow Me Tandem

Towing – Best Off-Road Match

Tow Rope – Towhee, 4yrs+

The Tow Rope is a strong rubber bungee covered in durable webbing that allows you to safely and smoothly assist your child up hills, over distances, through windy conditions or just to keep up with older siblings. Opening up where you can go and keeping it fun. Lightweight and easy to carry, just attach when you need it. You need to be happy that your child has the capability to bike down any places you decide to go.

Assisting your child with a tow behind your bike there will be little interference with your biking skills as you move around to adjust your balance to match the terrain. However you have a weight to pull compared to when riding solo. Do you have the strength and fitness to pull a bike and child over the varied terrain? Learn more in our story… how does it feel to ride with a Tow

Alternative Off-Road Option – Towing

Tow Frame – Follow Me Tandem, 3-9yrs

The Tow Frame is a very secure and stable bike to bike connection.  This frame effectively creates a tandem by lifting the front wheel of the child’s bike off the ground. This secure connection results in their being little disruption to both yours and your child’s biking balance. It can allow you to ride with a young child on easy off-road trails and make it fun when riding over distance and time – this is a great touring option.

The stability of the Tow Frame means you can ride connected to your child as young as 3 years old. It is easy to connect and disconnect from your childs bike while riding, supporting you both to ride solo as well as connected.  Learn more about the feel of towing in our story.
