Welcome to goRides Riding an E-Bike on Bikepaths Page, where we tackle the needs that are common for E-bike riders on off road paths/ trails. E-Bikes are a great way to enjoy your communities cycling infrastructure. The assist provided by an an E-Bike will often grow your riding capabilities You can ride good distances along a trail for fitness and recreation or maybe even consider a multi-day ride. If you have a suitable route they are great for commuting as you load up whatever you need for the day on the bike. With your improved ability to carry load you may choose to ride with kids attached on a kids seat or towed Use our resources to understand your needs based on the type of riding you do and want to do on off road trails and paths.

Whatever the type of riding you are doing because you are often riding further, faster, up and down hills on an reasonably expensive bike there are some things to consider that are specific to riding an E-Bike.

E-Bikes & Comfort/Warmth

Key things to know… time on an E-Bike can challenge your comfort.  With greater distances comes the possibility of more problems at your contact points – bruising, aches & pains.  It is really easy in the beginning on an E-Bike to over ride and stress your body.  As you tire your body may collapse or shift into poor posture.  Comfort needs to be worked on and listening to your body will help. With speed comes the challenge of warmth and maintaining a comfortable body temperature.  As the air flows past you being warm, especially in cooler temperatures, becomes more of an issue.  The assistance gained from an E-Bike makes the riding easier so your body may not warm up as quickly or at all.

Best way to solve this problem is to use padding, have a great seat, and be really aware of your body position.  Building up to greater time & distances is really important. We recommend reading both the stories in the link boxes. For warmth layer up, wear more insulating and warm clothing & accessories.  Begin your ride with protective outer layers on, blocking wind chill right from the start. In cool weather or cold temperatures protect the parts of your body (your extremities) that will not warm up on their own.

If you are having a specific issue with your saddle – sit bone discomfort, tailbone bruising, soft tissue compression or chaffing – please see our Comfort on Your Bike Seat – Stories & Support page that deals with the problems that seats can cause.

E-Bikes & Safety on Bikepaths…

Key things to know… E-Bikes travel at speed with less effort.  A greater speed than you would manage on a standard bike.  With this speed comes a couple of challenges. In busy environments or on popular pathways/cycleways, others must be able to see you or hear that you are coming.  In terms of protection the right helmet can be crucial for having the right protection in an incident.

Whenever you stop and leave your bike out on the trails you will want to know that it will be there when you get back so locks become an important part of owning an E-Bike.  E-Bikes are expensive and therefore targeted by thieves.

Best way to solve these issues is to use clothing as a way of increasing your visibility and have a bell to warn other track users that you’re coming.  Some E-Bikes will come with built in light systems that run off your battery, make the most of this.  Consider turning your lights on during the day when you are in busy places.  Helmet choice is really important for the greater speeds that an E-Bike can travel at.  Locks need to fit around the shape of your frame.

E-Bikes & Carrying Weight…

Key things to know… adding well balanced weight to an E-Bike can go relatively unnoticed.  You will use your assistance at a higher setting or more often to make the journey you take easier to manage.  A large number of E-Bikes come with strong frames and may include a rear carrier in the design. This is why E-Bikes are a popular choice for carrying gear or to use with kids (attached to the bike or being towed).  Any weight you add must be well balanced and not interfere with the handling of your bike.

Best way to solve this problem is to practice when you first add gear or a child.  Do this in a quiet location so you can test out your gears, brakes & steering with no hazards.  Choose products that have been designed for use with E-Bikes.  Always spread your load either forward and back or side to side, keeping it as low and centred as possible.

E-Bikes make adding the weight of a child an easy option for families.
