Multiday Mountain Biking: Safety & Comfort
Key things to know… you need to prioritise safety when taking kids into the backcountry. To support their enjoyment and safety being able to assist kids when they are getting tired or are struggling with the terrain and riding environment can be vital. The kids will be on their bikes for long periods, maybe longer than they have ever before so it is really important you consider their riding comfort. With more time on a bike and bumpy terrain comes the possibility of problems at their contact points – feelings of soreness and bruising. Consider how to cushion and protect their contact points (their bottom and hands). Also please note the seats on kids bikes are often of poor quality and design when it comes to comfort.
Best way to solve their safety and comfort is to;
- Make sure they have a helmet to match this level of back country riding… a Mountain Bike Helmet
- Carry a Tow Rope. This light and easy to carry accessory can be used when necessary and make a big difference to everyone’s enjoyment
- Improve their bike seat comfort by having Padded Underwear (Bike goUnders). With padding in their underwear they can match their riding clothing to the conditions.
- For comfort at the handlebars check their grips before you leave… if worn out replace and make sure you include bike gloves in their kit.

Multiday Mountain Biking & Kids Carrying Gear
Key things to know… is that the gear the kids carry will depend on several things. Their age, their bike handling, strength and fitness, how many days the ride is, your accommodation choices and if you are receiving any support or if you are completely independent (unsupported). Being a backcountry adventure it is likely the kids will need to carry some gear and again the weather needs to be considered, does that gear need to arrive dry? Learn more about this topic by reading one of our stories.
The best way to prepare for this is to prioritise the kids enjoyment and fun and understand their capability. This means the rest of the family/group will also have a great time and may need to help. Consider what you would like them to carry and then work out the best way to achieve this while ensuring their comfort and safety on the ride. Keeping things light weight is quite easy with the bag choices you have with mountain bikes. Also consider waterproof bags.

Multiday Mountain Biking & Weather Conditions
Key things to know… the kids are likely to enjoy your adventure if the weather is good. Unfortunately on a multiday ride you can’t control the weather… generally you just have to keep going. Having the right gear for the kids to keep them comfortable in a variety of weather conditions means they will be safe and have a more enjoyable experience. An experience that they will grow from and won’t be put off by.
Best way to solve weather issues is to be prepared with lightweight, packable gear options for all conditions. Different seasons will provide different demands and challenges. However whatever the season it is still important to be prepared for all types of weather. Be aware of the weather forecast and make riding clothing choices to match.Â
