Where you want to ride with your child now and as they grow can influence what is the right kids bike seat or towed solution for your family. To be confident when you ride and have safe and enjoyable experiences together it is best to have a kids bike seat or towed solution that works best for the environments you want to ride in.

In this story we are considering your Kids Seats and Towed Options for riding with a 4 plus year old off road. For other riding environments see

Bikepaths with a 4+ year old

Key Considerations:

Riding a bike on bikepaths that are away from traffic on sealed or compacted gravel provide a comfortable and relaxing way for your family to enjoy and improve your riding.  As bikepaths offer this relaxed riding environment most attached or towed options will be suitable. Your child is likely starting to become an independent rider after the age of 4. Therefore with this age group you are more likely looking to assist them while they are riding their own bike.  As riding on a bikepaths provides little limitation to your options it may be best to use other factors to determine your best solution for your family.

Options for riding Off-Road with a 4+ year old

  1. Tow Frame – Follow Me Tandem – Suitable to use as a tandem for the whole ride or intermittent use to assist.
  2. Tow Bar – Suitable for intermittent use to assist
  3. Tow Rope Suitable for intermittent use to assist
  4. Rear Kids Bike Seat for Older Kids
  5. Multi Use Off Road or Sports Trailer – Suitable for wider trails – check weight restrictions for a 4+yr old
  6. Mid Mount Seat – Best kids bike seat solution for well balanced kids – limited use due to age and weight restrictions

1. Tow Frame – Follow Me Tandem

Suitable for 3 -9 years for kids who are riding their own bike.

  • Best suited to bikepaths, as well as in traffic and riding easy off-road trails/tracks
  • This very secure bike to bike connection effectively creates a tandem with your child who is on their own bike. This can be suitable for all level of riders who ride their own bike. Those that are still developing balance to those that are well balanced
  • Can be used as a tandem for the whole ride… or easily connect the 2 bike together while out riding so riding solo can also be enjoyed.
  • Creating a bike to bike connection means you are making the decisions for your child… and this can be important to provide safety at times on a bikepath e.g. crossing a road
  • The stability of this connection means there is little disruption to the feel of riding and how you move on your bike. However you are towing and therefore you will need to have the strength and fitness to deal with this increased weight. Learn more – How does it feel to tow a child riding their own bike
  • To help you be prepared before you ride please read Riding Safely with a Tow Frame

2. Tow Bar – Trailgator

Suitable for 4-9 years for kids who are riding their own bike. Your child will need to be well balanced on their bike to consider using the Tow Bar. The design of this rigid bar means your child can lean and create a disruption to the adult riders biking balance.

  • With bikepaths being a safe and relaxed environments to ride with your child, the tow bar is a good solution to riding on bikepaths
  • Best suited for intermittent use to assist your child to ride further, for longer or up an incline that they may struggle with or through some traffic
  • Creating a bike to bike connection means you are making the decisions for your child… and this can be important to provide safety at times on a bikepath e.g. crossing a road
  • As the Tow Bar can create some lean and disruption to your biking balance you will need to learn to adjust to these changes. To understand more please read How does it feel to tow a child riding their own bike
  • To help you be prepared before you ride in traffic please read Riding Safely with a Tow Bar
  • To improve visibility riders should consider wearing a bright helmet and clothing.

3. Tow Rope – Towhee

Suitable for 4 plus years old who are capable and well balanced riding their own bike.

  • Best suited to intermittently assisting well balanced riders on their own bike.  Up hills, over distances and through windy conditions or to keep up with older siblings. Places they may struggle to go.
  • The Tow Rope is a strong rubber bungee covered in durable webbing. Lightweight and easy to carry… just attach when you need it.
  • It offers you the ability to assist your child over a wide age range.
  • There is little disruption to your balance on the bike as the towing is very smooth. However you do need the strength and fitness to be able to assist your child. Please read How does it feel to tow a child riding their own bike
  • To prepare for riding with the tow rope please read Riding Safely with a Tow Rope

4. Rear Kids Bike Seat for Older Kids

Suitable as a carrier mount or frame mount for 4-10 years.

  • This seat can offer an option to ride with an older child attached to your bike
  • This seat only has a lap belt to help keep your child safe and secure.
  • With your seat and child positioned behind you, you have minimal interference with movement as you adjust to the terrain of easy off-road riding. However due to the increased weight with carrying an older child you will notice changes compared to riding solo. Learn more at – How does it feel to ride with a with a Rear Kids Bike Seat

5. Recreation Multi-Use Trailer or Off-Road Multi-Use Trailer

BIKE TRAILERS are suitable for a 1 yr old up to… Single Trailer – 1 child up to 36kg…  Double Trailer – 1 or 2 children up to a total of 45kg. Can be used as a Stroller from a young age by adding a baby sling (0-10months). Please note that by 4 plus years you will get limited time to use your bike trailer.

  • The Recreation Trailer is best suited to riding on smooth surfaces. It is multi-use so you can easily convert it to a stroller/buggy while out and about. It does not provide additional storage
  • The Off-Road Trailer with adjustable suspension is better suited to gravel and bumpy trails. With increased storage capacity If you are using your trailer to commute/as a means of transport and you need to carry additional gear/groceries then this trailer is a better solution for you. For more detailed comparison between trailers please see Trailer Comparison.
  • The trailer is enclosed providing your child/children their own cosy space and helping to protect your child from the surrounding environment and weather. And help keep the 4 plus year old amused with some activities in the trailer.
  • Your child will be kept safe and secure while seated with a quality harness. You can purchase additional seating support to increase safety and comfort for your child. Please see Accessories Support for more information.
  • The size and bulk of a trailer can help make sure you are seen and help vehicles provide a wide berth.
  • To improve visibility please use the trailer with the supplied flag and the adult rider should consider wearing bright clothing and helmet.
  • Towing a bike trailer will make you wider and longer than when riding solo. To be safe it is important that you adjust to these changes. Please read How does it feel to bike with a Kids Bike Trailer
  • To help you be prepared before you ride in traffic please read Riding Safely with a Kids Bike Trailer.

6. Mid Mount Kids Bike Seats

Mid Mount Seats suitable from 2 years old with an upper age limit of 5 or 6 years. The age and weight restrictions are dependent on the seat you choose.

  • Best suited to riding bikepaths that you feel confident and capable riding on.
  • These seats has no harness so suits kids that have good balance. Your child will develop a feel for riding as they will learn to lean with the bike as you ride together.
  • There are different mid mount seats available – choose your best match
  • With your child positioned between your arms, they feel safe and you can see and understand their comfort and mood. You will enjoy the view and environment together as you create some wonderful riding moments and memories.
  • With your child seated in front of you ( between your chest and the handlebars) there is a change to the feel of your riding compared to riding solo. You will need to learn to adjust.   Skills such as getting on and off the bike as well as how you move on the bike with changes in the terrain will all be altered. See our story to understand more. How does it feel riding with a mid mount seat
  • Works best with medium or larger bike frames as larger sized frames provide the space between your chest and the handlebars you need to enjoy riding with this seat.
  • To help you prepare to ride with this seat see….Riding safely with a Mod Mount Kids Bike Seat.

There are factors other than ‘where you ride’ that will influence your decision about which seat or trailer to buy (your best match). Factors such as

  • The style of bike you have
  • The size of your family – how many children, now and in the future
