Having the bike seat at the correct height  is important so you child can be efficient in using their feet to propel and stop the balance bike

What is the correct seat height

Lets help you understand the correct height for the seat of your child’s balance bike

The seat is at the correct height when – your child can sit on the seat and straighten their leg out in front of them and have the whole sole of the foot in contact with the ground. There should be a very slight bend in the knee or what I would call a soft knee in this position

Watch out for any leaning of their body to the side. The movement needs to solely come from the hip. If they are having to lean to achieve this position then the seat is too high.

REFER TO THE IMAGE This shows the seat height is correct as it allows the leg to straighten out in front (with a slight bend in the knee) and have connection with the whole sole of the foot on the ground.

It may take a few adjustment for you to determine this height.

A good starting point is to either;

  1. Measure the inseam height of your Child …see method here and set the seat height 3-5cm lower than this measurement
  2. If your child is old enough and has the required skills/height. Undo the seat mechanism and pop the seat as low as it goes. Have your child straddle the bike positioning the seat 3-5cm lower than their crutch area.

The geometry of the bike and the angle of the seat post impacts the height relative to the crutch or inseam measurement. Therfore we give a guideline as 3-5cm but recommend that you fine tune the height based on the position outlined above

Adjust as they grow

Your child will grow as they continue to ride their balance bike. We highly recommend that you check in regularly with your seat height measurement and adjust to a higher height to match their change in height.

Why is it important

Having the right seat height on a balance bike ensures a safer, more comfortable, and enjoyable riding experience for your child as they develop their balance and biking skills.  The correct height allows them to;

  • use their feet for stopping and starting,
  • feel confident and in control of their bike.
  • provides correct and efficient movement. It allows them to easily progress their skills on the balance bike from walking, running to gliding. Improving both balance and steering.
