“People travel twice as much on the electric bike (as on a regular bike), both in terms of kilometres, amount of trips, and as part of the total transportation.” Institute of Transport Economics.

What will an E-Bike offer you? How will it support a healthier lifestyle?

E-Bikes & Time on the Bike…

E-Bike are fantastic at providing more opportunity to ride. Meaning you will ride  more regularly and ride further – superb. However …

More time on a bike (e-bike) can challenge your comfort.  With greater distances comes the possibility of more problems at your contact points – bruising, aches & pains.  It is really easy in the beginning on an E-Bike to over ride and stress your body.  As you tire your body may collapse or shift into poor posture.  Comfort needs to be worked on and listening to your body will help.

There is lots you can do to support your comfort at your contact points on the bike: Comfort on your seat and the handlebars  Building up to greater time & distances is really important.  This makes rest days just as critical as ride days.  Also resting or taking mini breaks when you are out riding.

Preferably start early at addressing your comfort….don’t let it get to a point where you are not enjoying your riding. Read our support information and find out your options for supporting your comfort.

Protect yourself at your main contact points and your riding will be more enjoyable.

Comfort on the Bike Seat

Our Bike Seat Comfort Guide outlines options and strategies to finding your comfort. Often it will not come down to a single solution but a multiple of strategies to understand what works best for you. Options such as wearing bike specific underwear or pants, using a cream, a saddle that matches your riding and is positioned correctly as well as improving how you ride. Use our comfort consultation for one on one support to acheiving comfort.

Ride For Longer

E-Bikes are fantastic at creating more biking opportunities for all levels of riders. This often means that you will ride for longer and ride more regularly. Learn how you can successfully ride for longer periods of time on your bike/e-bike

E-Bikes – Be Warm, Be Seen…

E-Bikes travel at speed with less effort.  A greater speed than you would manage on a standard bike.  With this speed comes a couple of challenges.  The first is around warmth and maintaining a comfortable body temperature.  As the air flows past you being warm, especially in cooler temperatures, becomes more of an issue.  The assistance gained from an E-Bike makes the riding easier so your body may not warm up as quickly or at all.

In busy environments, whether that is on the road, in traffic, or on popular pathways/cycleways, others may not see you or judge the speed you are travelling at correctly.

There is lots you can do to support you being warm and seen on an e-bike . E-Bike riders may need to layer up and/or wear more insulating & thermal clothing to maintain a good body temperature as they ride.

Be Warm on an E-Bike

To be warm you can wear layers as well as wear more insulating and warm clothing & accessories.  Begin your ride with protective outer layers on, blocking wind chill right from the start.  In cool weather or cold temperatures protect the parts of your body (your extremities) that will not warm up on their own.

Be Visible on an E- Bike

Use lights & clothing as a way of increasing your visibility.  Some E-Bikes will come with built in light systems that run off your battery, make the most of this.  Consider turning your lights on during the day when you are in traffic.  Steady lights help drivers determine the speed you are moving at and flashing lights draw attention. Stacking lights is a great way to aid your visibility. Add a light to you – your helmet/clothing/bag  Choose bright colours in your outer layers, including your helmet and bike gloves. Being seen on any bike is important and we cannot emphasize the importance on an e-bike when you are often travelling at greater speeds.

E-Bikes, Safety & Tools…

Riding an E-Bike safely is generally to do with controlling the weight of the bike, balance and the speed you travel at.  Given time you will adjust to handling your E-Bike so be patient and don’t expect it to be easy immediately. Another important consideration is your battery and understanding it. How far is the range in terms of distance it will take you?  How does the power setting influence this?  How often do you need to be charging it?

In terms of tools, you don’t need anything special or different. Though e-bikes do require greater care on tyre pressure and battery charge.

There is lots you can do to feel safe.

Give yourself time to feel confident with your E-Bike.

Safety on an E- Bike

Take the time when you first get your E-Bike to get familiar with it.  Take your bike to a safe, quiet place for the first few rides.  Practice getting on and off it.  Practice moving it around when you are not riding it – where is the weight and how does this weight effect your ability to turn it around, maneuver it.

As you ride more you will begin to understand your battery more and the ability that this gives you to ride further than you would on a standard bike.   Carrying a special tow rope to help with a real battery emergency is something you should consider.  Ride with peace of mind knowing when you ride big distances or in isolated areas with a buddy.  If your battery is flat or develops a fault you can get home using an electric bike tow rope.

Maintenance & Tools to Carry

We always recommend carrying tools as you never know when a problem will happen to you.

The speeds of E-Bikes means when you hit small bumps and rises at greater speed there is more potential for a flat tyre if they are not well pumped.

A good quality floor pump that is easy to use is a must for at home.  Keep it near where you store your E-Bike and every time you check your charge, check your tyre pressure as well.

Any type of ride where help is not immediately at hand and your need to be self sufficient increases so take a bike specific first aid kit.

Bike Skills for E-Bike Riders

Riding a bike  is a skill that everyone can achieve. There are skills you can practise and understand more to help you feel confident riding an e-bike

E-Bikes & Carrying Gear or Children…

One of the great things about riding an e-bike is its ability to carry load.  Adding well balanced weight to an E-Bike can go relatively unnoticed.  You will use your assistance at a higher setting or more often to make the journey you take easier to manage.  A large number of E-Bikes come with strong frames and may include a rear carrier in the design. This is why E-Bikes are a popular choice for urban riding & families.  Any weight you add must be well balanced and not interfere with the handling of your bike.

Best way to solve this problem i

E-bike

E-Bikes make adding weight in the form of gear or shopping less of a challenge.

Carrying Gear

Practice when you first add gear or a child.  Do this in a quiet location so you can test out your gears, brakes & steering with no hazards.  Choose products that have been designed for use with E-Bikes.  Always spread your load either forward and back or side to side, keeping it as low and centred as possible.

There are lots of options for carrying gear.  View the range from small to large and get the solution that works for you.

Carrying or Towing Kids

Learn when it is safe to ride with your baby/1yr old and understand the kids bike seat and towed options for this age group. Discover what is the best solution for your family and how to keep them safe and comfortable on the bike.

E-Bikes & Protection…

Speed is a part of riding an E-Bike so you need to have the right type of bike gear to protect you. A quality helmet & gloves, as well as wearing clothing that provides some coverage. gear that will protect you well in a fall or crash.

Your E-bike is a target whenever it is left unattended, this is true for all expensive bikes.  To have peace of mind your lock needs to have a mid to high level rating.

There is lots you can do

Have the right protection for the speeds you travel at.

Protecting You

is to match your gear to your risk level.  We always recommend full head coverage for bike helmets but you will also need a lightweight, comfortable helmet that is durable and strong.  Performance level helmets will absorb and disperse the energy from a high speed crash far better than cheaper helmets.  Yes you will need to invest to get this type of protection but it is well worth it.

Protecting Your Bike & Gear

Locks will need to suit your frame design & shape.  They should be simple to use and give you a good sense of safety so you can leave you bike whenever you need to.

E-Bikes & Where & How you Ride..

Your needs will vary depending on the type of e-bike and where you ride  Learn about your needs based on the type of biking you will do.
