Welcome to goRides Multi-day riding page, where we help you get prepared for riding over multiple days with kids.
A multiday ride is a great challenge and adventure for your family. We have written various stories that will support you to enjoy your riding when riding for longer and over consecutive days with the family. If the kids have a great time then you will have a great time. Be prepared to support your family with the right gear for your multiday adventure.
Multi-day Riding & Comfort
Keep the kids comfortable on their bike seat & handlebars…
Key things to know… it is unlikely they have ever spent so much time on their bike seat before doing this multiday ride. More time on a bike comes with the possibility of problems at their contact points – feelings of soreness and bruising. To enjoy the riding you need to consider how to cushion and protect their contact points (their bottom and hands). Also please note the seats on kids bikes are often of poor quality and design when it comes to comfort. This makes providing some padded protection at this contact point essential for their riding enjoyment.
Best way to solve this bike seat comfort problem is for kids is to ride with sewn in padding in bike underwear or ride in padded bike pants. Bike goUnders for Kids (Padded Bike Underwear) are available with a soft cushioning chamois/pad. With the padding in their underwear they can match their riding clothing to the conditions. For comfort at the handlebars check their grips before you leave. If worn out replace them and consider adding bike gloves to their biking kit for protection and, if necessary, warmth.

Multi-day Riding & Kids Carrying Gear
What gear should kids take & how should they carry it?
Key things to know… is that what gear the kids carry will depend on their age, whether this is their first multiday and how your family have planned to complete your biking trip. Factors such as support from others who are taking the bulk of your gear (you carry only what you need for the day). Are you tackling an unsupported biking adventure? So you need everything with you.
Best way to prepare for this is to prioritise the kids enjoyment and fun. This means the rest of the family/group will also have a great time. Get them to carry gear to their capability. At the least consider getting them to carry something special, a small toy friend or special item, a couple of snacks… their own water. If they have the ability to carry more… maybe additional clothes/jacket. It can expand from there if you are doing your ride unsupported or they are happy to carry more.

Multi-day Riding & Assist Kids Riding their own Bike
Keep it fun and help them bike further
Key things to know having an option to tow your child while riding their own bike can help keep everyone happy and wanting to ride their bike. You can ride further, support them through weather (wind or rain), help them out when they are tired or struggling up a hill/incline. The Tow Frame or Tow Bar can be a great option to help keep them safe if your bikepath needs to cross traffic or takes you through traffic. These rigid connections mean you are making all the decisions. Bikepaths are safe environments where having the option to tow can expand your family riding options.

Multi-day Riding & Weather
Be prepared for changing conditions…
Key things to know… about riding multidays with kids. The kids are likely to enjoy your adventure if the weather is good. Unfortunately on a multiday ride you can’t control the weather… generally you just have to keep going. Having the right gear for the kids to keep them comfortable in a variety of weather conditions from sun, cold, wind and rain, means they will be safe and have a more enjoyable experience. An experience that they will grow from and won’t be put off by.
Best way to solve these issues is to be prepared with gear for the kids for all weather conditions. Different seasons will provide different demands and challenges. Whatever season you are completing your multiday ride within it is still important to be prepared for all weather conditions. Take gear on your trip that will give you options for all conditions. Be aware of the weather forecast and make riding clothing choices to match. When riding carry additional gear with you that you know will keep the kids comfortable if the weather changes.
