Overview: Electric Bike, Electric Cargo Bike
E-Bikes:
Using an E-Bike to ride with a young child is a fantastic way to start your families riding journey. E-Bikes are used in all riding environments from around town riding to multi day tour riding so you can choose an E-Bike that matches the type of riding you want to enjoy as a family. Having the assistance of an E-Bike will help make the riding you do easy and enjoyable. There will be no barriers or limitations around where you want to go, whether that is distance or terrain/hills. When you add the weight of more than one child an E-Bike can be a life saver and keep you out on the trails and riding around town as your children grow and get heavier. E-Bikes have strong frames and are generally designed to enable carrying weight (exception being E-Mountain Bikes). So not only can you use them with children put you can also carry gear by attaching bags or panniers to the frame.

Also think about your increased speed and how to protect your child. Adding a windscreen to a front seat is a great investment or putting your child in a rear seat behind your body. Make sure you wrap them up warm before you head off on your E-Bike ride. They should have at least one more layer than you are wearing on. Shotgun who make a great range of mid mount seats also make “Kids Pogies” which are big handlebar mitts for kids size hands, a great added accessory to keep them warm all year round.
E-Cargo Bikes:
The ultimate in family transport, often used to replace a second car. An Electric Cargo Bike takes all the effort of riding a heavy bike away with the assistance it provides you. Also enabling you to ride hills. Battery placement needs to be considered and whether this will interfere with your ability to attach a kids bike seat.
Type of Riding: E-Cargo bikes are for around town, urban, commute style riding. They are heavy and have a large turning circle so don’t do well on tight corners. They need smooth, wide tracks for any type of off road riding. Often purchased as a replacement for a car, they are a big investment so need to be well used to make it worth it.
E-Bikes & Attached Kids Bike Seats
There is a good range of attached kids bike seats in NZ. So you will be able to find something that works with the E-Bike you have. The options include
- Front Seats attached at your handlebar stem (age of child 1-3yrs)
- Mid Seats clamped on to the top tube (age of child 2-5yrs)
- Rear Seats attached directly onto a rear carrier or clamped to the seat post tube (age of child 1-6yrs)

There is a good range of towing options in NZ. So you will be able to find something that works with the E-Bike you have. The options include
- Bike to bike connections, child riding their own bike. The range includes Tow Rope (age of child 4yrs to adult), Tow Bar (age of child 4-9yrs), Tow Frame (age of child 3yrs to 9yrs)
